Sig-alert after Carquinez Bridge car fire, collision

California Highway Patrol officers were responding to separate means collisions Tuesday that confined traffic on Interstate 80 and Highway 4, authorities said.

Shortly before 9 p.m., CHP officers responded to reports of a car fire and collision, possibly associated with unspecified police activity, in eastbound I-80 lanes on the Carquinez Bridge just east of the Pomona Street exit.

Crockett-Carquinez Fire Department firefighters also responded to the incident, saying in a social-media post that two vehicles’ fires had been contained and that multiple ambulances were on scene.

The CHP issued a Sig-alert at 9 p.m. with no estimated time of reopening, and briefly diverted eastbound traffic west at Cummings Skyway. Officers had reopened two left-hand lanes by 9:55 p.m.

Officers suggested eastbound Highway 4 to northbound I-680 and the Benicia Bridge as an alternate route for drivers.

At 9:40 p.m., CHP officers responded to reports of a body in eastbound Highway 4 lanes at the McEwen Road on-ramp, and arrived to find a downed Harley Davidson motorcycle with its rider lying in middle lanes experiencing from injuries after a solo crash. The rider was distinct dead at the scene.

CHP officers issued a Sig-alert closing multiple eastbound lanes at 9:55 p.m. with no estimated time of reopening.
