Platinum Jubilee live updates: Military parade, flypast mark Queen Elizabeth II’s 70 years on throne




Royal fans camped outside of Buckingham Palace on Wednesday night in hopes of nabbing a good identify to catch a glimpse of Queen Elizabeth II, who was expected to attend the jubilee celebrations. Some fans brought tents and sleeping bags. Others said they could make do with chairs or just wouldn’t sleep at all.

Mary Foster, 46, a Canadian who runs her own business, said the secret to camping out was to bring a “good friend to help pass the time,” and “additional blankets and lots of Prosecco.” She brought a tent, too, which she draped with maple leaf bunting.

Alison Walton, 55, who works as a warehouse operative at a garden center, was camping with a group of eight friends — not her family, “they think I’m mad.” It was the first time she’d ever attended a jubilee or anything similar. She calculated with Prince Charles, 73, and Prince William, 39, there was doubtful to be another Platinum Jubilee for a long time.

“I won’t see this history ever again. I don’t think our children’s children will see it,” she said, of a monarch clocking 70 years on the throne. “She’s a dignified lady who gave her all to her country,”
